Mappi, one of regencies in Papua Province, is geographically dominated by rivers and swamps; hence the so-called Regency of "Million Swamps". Despite its potential and abundant resources, Mappi is still coping with its lagging development. On May 7, 2019, Regent of Mappi, Kristosimus Yohanes Agawemu, along with his team, made a visit to CCR SMART CITY’s office, expressing their interest in collaborating with the CCR in the future.

Through a discussion with SMART CITY Partnership Manager Ahmad Gamal Ph.D, Regent Agamewu articulated his vision to develop the regency, with focus on urban and economic development, infrastructure, and people’s welfare. He also mentioned about Mappi's need of technology training for teachers in the regency, hospital management (in terms of design, facility, human resources, and services), and better system for community health center.

This meeting will be a stepping stone to a prospective collaboration between the two parties, where SMART CITY can help catalyzing the development of Mappi by providing experts in their respective fields, a further study on its Spatial Plan, Detailed Spatial Plan, and capacity building for the civil servants in Mappi.
